Awaiting Odds

Enter decimal odds to expose the margin.

If your own read on an outcome is higher than the true probability shown, that gap is your edge. Size it sensibly with the Kelly Staking Tool. 18+. Play responsibly. SARGF Helpline: 0800 006 008.

How the math works

1. Implied probability

Every decimal odd is a probability in disguise: 1 divided by the odds. Odds of 2.00 mean the book is calling it a 50% chance. Odds of 4.00 mean 25%.

2. The overround

Add up the implied probabilities of every outcome and the total comes to more than 100%. That extra is the overround, the bookmaker's cut. A market at 107% is keeping 7% whether you win or lose.

3. True probability

Divide each implied probability by the overround and the vig is stripped out. That is the market's real view of each outcome. If your number is higher than the true probability, you have found an edge.

Betbizi field note: where the vig hides

A typical South African soccer 3-way market carries a 6% to 10% margin. On every R100 you stake, around R6 to R10 is the book's cut before a ball is kicked. Sharp international books run 2% to 3%. That gap is why comparing odds across bookmakers is not optional, it is the whole game.

Questions, answered

What is the vig?

The vig, or overround, is the bookmaker's built-in cut. It is why the implied probabilities of all outcomes add up to more than 100%. It is charged on every bet, win or lose.

What is a good margin?

Under 5% is sharp. 5% to 8% is average for most South African books. Above 8% is expensive. The lower the margin, the less you pay in hidden cost and the easier it is to be profitable.

How do I find value with this?

Compare your own researched chance for an outcome against the true probability shown. If yours is higher, the market is paying you better than the real risk. That is value.
